HIGHWAY 47

REVIEWS. (score out of 5)

Orphans - ****

Dir: Peter Mullan
Starring:

Douglas Henshall
Gary Lewis
Rosemarie Stevenson
Stephen McCole

An awesome, surreal experience venturing into the decaying world of three brothers and a sister who have recently lost their mother. Each character embodies a different emotional reaction to the situation, grieving through anger, fear and obsession. The acting may be a little overdone but it compliments the fantastically surreal visuals.

Run Lola Run - ****

Dir: Tom Tykwer
Starring:

Franka Potente
Moritz Bleibtreu

With a fast tempo and original style this film will excite the senses. The tale of Lola having to find 100000 marks in twenty minutes to save her boyfriend who botched a drug deal is visually spectacular and thrilling. The film shows three ways the events could unfold, but by the end it is a little tedious. A great, pumping soundtrack compliments this action packed piece perfectly; turn it up loud.

Sunset Blvd. - *****

Dir: Billy Wilder
Starring:

Gloria Swanson
William Holden

A classic film with great moments, humourous, tragic and moving. The story follows a scriptwriter who is in financial trouble and his relationship with an aging actress. The acting is superb with Holden putting in a fine performance and Swanson steals the show as the old silent film star living in the past. The atmosphere is perfectly realised and it has a great style.

The Talented Mr. Ripley - ****

Dir: Anthony Minghella
Starring:

Matt Damon
Jude Law
Gwyneth Paltrow
Cate Blanchett

A mesmerising insight into the troubled mind of Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), exquisitely shot by cinematographer John Seale and masterfully directed by Anthony Minghella. The film follows Tom’s increasingly dark experiences as he struggles to cope with his reality, isolated and lonely he yearns for love. All the cast put in amazing performances with Matt Damon’s performance absolutely captivating as he makes us empathise for Tom even through all that he does. The film has a great soundtrack and the locations are gorgeous.
